Attend the Top of Folsom Festival!
A unique annual event, Top of Folsom gets its name from its location – high atop the historic upper deck of the 4 level brick built parking structure, offering full panoramic views across the whole city. Organized by the Folsom Historic District, more than forty wineries, breweries and restaurant chefs from across Northern California are brought together for an evening of very special entertainment. Underneath the starlight, guests can enjoy art, music and performance pieces whilst sampling a variety of local food and drink. A number of breweries will be offering samples of their own individual beers, and guests will also be given a special wine glass when they arrive at the event which bears the Top of Folsom commemorative logo. This year’s event is being held on September 14th and is expected to attract visitors from across the country. If you will be at one of the places to stay around Folsom CA, you should definitely check out the event.
Aside from the culinary delights of the festival, the other main attraction is its art. In 2013, twenty or more artists are expected to be in attendance. Throughout the evening, performance art demonstrations will take place, including live music and celebrity appearances. The 2012 event was host to the stars of ‘Yardcore’, a popular television program whose presenters Jake and Joel Moss, Terrence Martin and Doug Tolson created urban sculptures from repurposed scrap materials which were then displayed publicly. In performance of a different nature, the chef of Karen’s Bakery Cafe – Karen Holmes – created an enormous salad by throwing ingredients down several stories of the building into a large tarpaulin held by her assistants, which was tossed using pitchforks and subsequently served. Much of the art on display during the evening is available for purchase, and provides local artists with an excellent opportunity to promote their creations.
The Top of Folsom event raises money for various local charities, including the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary and Historic Folsom. Folsom Zoo Sanctuary was founded in 1963 and is unlike most other zoos: the animal houses in its facilities are mostly native to North America and were either raised as pets and then rejected by their owners or were injured or orphaned. Their animals are unable to be rehabilitated into the wild and therefore stay in the Sanctuary where there is a distinct focus on education, teaching visitors about responsible treatment of animals and the differences between animals which make good companion pets and the wild species which do not. Historic Folsom holds monthly events to raise the profile of their cause and to promote local businesses, from farmer’s markets to outdoor dance events. The annual Top of Folsom celebration is a highlight of their calendar.
